What a day...

I celebrated my 50th birthday today, which seems very strange - how can I be that old? It just doesn't seem possible and I don't FEEL that old (okay, maybe once in awhile, but not that often!).  Anyway, I had a fun day at work with flowers and presents and kids singing to me, etc., and then went out this evening to celebrate with friends.  However, the best event of the day was a phone call I received from my mom this afternoon.  My nephew and his wife had their baby girl this morning! So now I share a birthday with a great-niece! What a wonderful and special gift for me.  She wasn't due until the 23rd so this was very early and so totally unexpected.

It was a very good day...

In Remembrance of the Titanic

As someone who cruises a lot, all of the stuff about the Titanic creates sort of weird feelings.  I'm horrified for the passengers who died so long ago and angry that the company was so arrogant to truly think the ship couldn't sink and so didn't have enough lifeboats.  But of course the whole story is fascinating too in a way, otherwise so many books and movies wouldn't have been made about it! :)

Anyway, a very good fan-fic was written several years ago by Jael.  It's a crossover between Titanic and Lord of the Rings (may sound a bit strange at first, but she has a series where Thranduil and company have lived on into the present day.)  It follows the Titanic story very closely and is told from the point of view of Charles Lightoller, a real officer on the ship.  Here is a link:

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas!!!!

A friend of mine drew this picture years ago and I happened to put this poinsettia in front of it and it made a perfect holiday picture! :)  I hope you all have a wonderful and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Colbert Report...

Whatever your political leanings I think you'll enjoy this short video.  Stephen Colbert LOVES Tolkien and it comes out from time to time on his show.

I haven't done a MEME - or anything else on here! - for a long time, I thought I do this one!

The Rules:

1. People who have been tagged must write the answers on their blog and replace any question they dislike with a new, original question. (Okay, anybody I tag, feel free to ignore!

2. Tag five people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

Tagging does not obligate you in the slightest! However, since The Rules say I must tag people:  marta , ainu_laireastromist , blslarner , and runnerbeast .  And I don't know why, but LJ is randomly italicizing things. *scratches head*

1. Make a list of 5 things you can see without getting up.

-One of my cats staring at me through the slider begging me to get up and letting him in. :)
-A giant ladybug pillow my niece got me for Christmas.
-My picture of Aragorn that my best friend drew for me.
-My Kindle!
-Rows of DVDs lining the shelves.

2. How do you style your hair?

I have a perm so I mostly just pick it out and let it air dry!

3. What are you wearing now?

Blue jeans and a long sleeved sweater.

4. What's your occupation?

Elementary School Teacher - Librarian.

5. What do you hear right now?

The furnace just kicked on.

6. Who was the last person you hugged?

A friend.

7. What is/was for dinner?

A turkey club sort of sandwich from DQ with a Blizzard... not real healthy.

8. What did you do today?

Taught a bunch of children and then came home and chilled out by reading and messing around online!

9. Dog person or cat person?

I like both, but I only have cats right now because they're easier to leave when I travel.

10. If you had to change your name, what would you change it to?

I wouldn't... I like my name.

11. What was the last thing you bought?

Well, I guess it would be dinner... but I bought a new book last night for my Kindle.

12. If you could afford to go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

13. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Still teaching, but probably at a different school and with the way the economy is I imagine that I will have to move to a classroom.  I think teacher - librarians will be replaced by aides.

14. Favorite book-to-movie adaptation?

LoTR, definitely.

15: What are you doing this weekend?

Laundry! My water heater went out and now we found other problems and so I'm having to have my pipes replaces so I have NO hot water in my house.  So, I'll be going to a friend's place to get caught up.

16. If you could play any musical instrument, which one would you play?

The Piano! I took lessons for awhile as a kid but then we moved and I never had a chance to continue, I just think it would be fun.

17. To U or not to U? Favourite, Colour etc

No, I don't like adding the letter 'u' into words... it's a British convention, not an American one, so I don't use it.

18. What are you doing tomorrow?

Working, going to a meeting... getting up really early to go to a friend's house to take a shower! :)

19. What are you looking forward to the most?

Right now? Having hot water! But then having spring break in a few weeks and my Alaskan cruise this summer!

Happy Thanksgiving

I haven't been on here for months for various reasons, but I hope to get back into the swing of it soon!  I do hope you have a special day with your family and friends and that you travel safely.

My internet service has been absolutely horrible lately, in fact I'm changing it next week, but because I haven't been able to get online much, I haven't been able to tell you about my new great nephew Everett! He was born last week on the 11th - the same day as I finished up school so it was a very good day. *grin* I'm expecting another great niece of nephew any day now so the cousins will have fun together as they grow up.  Here's a picture of my nephew Seth with his firstborn son.  He's a very proud father! :)

Thirty Years Ago today...

Mount St. Helens exploded in Washington State.  I was a senior in high school in Spokane, Washington and we were blanketed in ash.  It's something I'll never forget.  It was a very scary time because we didn't know what was going to happen next - would the other volcanoes in the Cascade Mtns. explode, was the ash really dangerous, etc.  The Spokane newspaper has this wonderful little video about those days and then the Big Picture blog also posted pictures today.

Here is a picture of the beautiful mountain on May 17th:

And here it is during the eruption on May 18th:

There are several wonderful articles on the Spokesman.com website describing that morning thirty years ago if you are interested in reading more about that day.  I tried to post some stuff here, but it wouldn't copy here for some reason.

My favorite college basketball team - Gonzaga - won their first game in the NCAA tournament today.  It was a very good game and the guys played well and get to play again on Sunday.  But I was so nervous I was sick to my stomach. :)  Not badly, but still... *rolls eyes at self*

Anyway, it was truly was fun to watch and now I look forward to the next game and hope they win that game, although if they do it would be a HUGE upset.

Okay, now we return to our regular programing... I'll try not to bore you too much with my absolute love of college basketball, but I may have to once in awhile!!  Here are pictures of my favorite player - Matt Bouldin. The first is after the 'Zags' won the league championship a few weeks ago and the other is during a practice last year - he has such a great smile!

Poor Tucker cat

I just returned from the pet emergency place where I left my cat Tucker who is now having surgery on his cheek.  Evidently he was in a cat fight or something because there are two puncture wounds there and an abscess.  I'm not sure when it happened.  I noticed a couple of days ago he was acting funny... he wasn't hanging around me as much as usual.  He usually is sitting here at my feet and he was off in the living room sort of tucked away.  Then yesterday he was really cleaning his cheek and that area was getting matted.  I looked at it, but didn't notice anything.  When I got home tonight he had rubbed all of the hair off of that area and 'gunk' (the technical term!) was oozing from the wound.

I sort of freaked out because it looked so bad.  I'd gotten home late and so I had to take him to the emergency place so this isn't going to be cheap, but you do what you have to do when you have pets! :)

Here's a picture of him:
